The holiday was, in its origin, a marketing exercise. It has also been, in practice, a tradition that lasted nearly forty years.
Coffee is the only beverage that has ever successfully invented a holiday dedicated to a grandparent.

In the United States, National Grandparents’ Day falls on the first Sunday after Labor Day — September 13, 2026. The holiday was established by Congress in 1978 and signed into law by President Jimmy Carter, after years of campaigning by Marian McQuade, a West Virginia homemaker who wanted to highlight the isolation experienced by many elderly Americans living in care homes. The original intent was civic: encourage visits, acknowledge contributions, fight loneliness. It has since become, like most American holidays, primarily a category for greeting card sales.
It deserves something better than a card. The coffee category — specifically, the right coffee — makes an honest case for that something better.
